This is a morning event, running from 10:30 - 13:30, starting with refreshments from 10:00 and closing with a buffet lunch. There is no charge for attending.

Geoffrey Crisp is currently working on a National Fellowship through the Australian Learning and Teaching Council on Rethinking assessment in the participatory digital world – assessment 2.0. His group is interested in developing strategies around redefining assessment in the Web 2 (and beyond) environment and collecting examples of assessment tasks where there is clear alignment between the learning activities that are set by teachers, the medium that students use to develop their skills and capabilities and the format and medium used for the associated assessment tasks. They are looking at how students are assessed in a collaborative, cooperative, participatory and distributed educational environment.

Participants will also have an opportunity to see a demonstration of recent work by the SQA presented by Mhairi McAlpine and Linn van der Zanden. SQA is developing Games Based Assessment in selected Skills for Work Courses (SQAGamesSpace). This will allow candidates to enter a simulated workplace environment in and perform tasks to demonstrate the key competencies required. Games Based Assessment in Retailing Intermediate 2 and Health Sector Intermediate 1 has been completed and new subject areas are currently in development. This demo will take you through the 3D environments as a learner and explain the underlying assessment processes.

In addition, SQA has been providing a free online e-portfolio - SQA DeskSpace - to all Skills for Work Candidates since 2008. This e-portfolio has been customised to meet the needs of Skills for Work courses, with reflective learning and collaborative working built in to the evidence gathering process, as well as the ability to upload documents, pictures and recordings in the system. Through the online system candidates can access their work from a range of locations - where courses are being provided by schools and colleges in partnership, this means improved transfer of files and access to the complete record of work completed by candidates for both institutions. DeskSpace will also be available for mobile platforms including the iPhone from August 2010, allowing candidates to use their own phones to record and upload evidence to their e-portfolio.

This event will be of interest to all involved in student assessment, in particular those who assess students in virtual worlds or using Web 2.0 type environments.
