OpenMuch of the work of JISC CETIS is underpinned by the principle of openness.
"Openness means ensuring that there is little or no barrier to access for anyone who can contribute to a particular development or use its output." Wilbert Kraan, JISC CETIS Assistant Director. The Centre promotes various aspects of openness including:1. open development processes and governance models for interoperability specifications and standards (open standards); 2. open access to standards documents, educational content, educational tools and widgets, and educational applications of Linked Data and the Semantic Web (open educational resources, open administrative data, open assessment); 3. openness of educational communities of practice and interest. Further discussion of openness can be found in the OER briefing paper 2008 by Li Yuan, Sheila MacNeill and Wilbert Kraan. This new topic (2011) pulls together some of the current discussions around openness, its advantages and drawbacks. Open Educational Resources is a related topic.Articles

Last week, David Kernohan and myself attended three conferences in North America, all with a common underlying theme of open. But, as many of us know, there are many types/flavours/definitions of open in education today. This post tries to make sense of some of the common themes across the week.

It’s open education week, lots of interesting events are happening and lots of reflections being made on what open education means. One set of reflections that caught my eye was a trio of posts from Jisc programme managers David, Amber and Lawrie: three personal attempts to draw a picture of the open education space to [...]

But on a more personal level, I was delighted to get an confirmation email yesterday that the Stanford open course on Natural Language Processing is starting [...]
