Learning PlatformsRelated Topics:WidgetsFollowing the exploration of functionality 'around' the VLE, the functionality within the VLE began to be seen by some as too limited and restrictive. The rise of social media suggested that an alternative could be constructed out of various existing web tools by individual teachers and learners. The PLE discussion captured that idea and pros, cons and models are still vigorously examined. But the VLE is still there, proving that it has a clear role in most educational institutions. The resulting tension between the role of the VLE as a common tool for the organisation on the one hand, and the desire to make it permeable to the wider web on the other is leading to the emergence of a number of hybrid architectures. Such distributed learning environments range from the traditional VLE, augmented with a selection of widgets, via environments that are entirely composed of widgets to learning environments that are effectively widget engines themselves. Other approaches to augment and modify learning environments include plug-ins and the like. The current JISC DVLE (distributed virtual learning environments) Programme is exploring a number of approaches to extending the functionality of VLEs. Articles

Following on from yesterday's post, another "thought bomb" that has been running around my brain is something far closer to the core of Audrey's "who owns your educational data?" presentation. Audrey was advocating the need for student owned personal data lockers (see screen shot below). This idea also chimes with the work of [...]

Thanks to Pat Lockley for drawing my attention to Reuter’s interesting take on inBloom, the US K-12 development that I blogged about a couple of weeks ago. You can find the article here: K-12 student database jazzes tech startups, spooks parents. Just in case you missed it, inBloom is a new technology integration [...]

One of the problems with being part of an innovation centre like CETIS is that we suffer a bit from the Dory complex. For those of you unfamiliar with this concept, it is based on the character Dory in the movie Finding Nemo who is rather easily distracted by new things. Sometimes we [...]

Week 5 in #oldsmooc has been all about prototyping. Now I've not quite got to the stage of having a design to prototype so I've gone back to some of my earlier thoughts around the potential for Cloudworks to be more useful to learners and show alternative views of community, content and activities. I [...]

Stage two of my "adventures in MOOC-land" started this week as the e-Learning and Digital Cultures course started this week. I have signed up for Coursera courses before but for various reasons, I haven't got very far. However I have a lot more motivation for sticking with this course. For the past [...]
